Seeking stylish boutiques, malls are courting entrepreneurs
December2005; by Sara Wilson
Chains and department stores are mall staples, but developers are now seeking boutiques. "Upscale boutiques allow malls to brand themselves," says the International Council of Shopping Centers' Pairice Duker. The embracing of smaller retailers, which Duker first noticed during the fourth quarter of 2003,gives consumers new reasons to visit malls. It also gives entrepreneurs in valuable exposure.
Jennifer started riding the wave before it had even gained momentum In 1994.she started Croll Corp., a California based retailer of high-end mens and women's clothing, ranging from designer T-shirts to cutting-edge bridal gowns. Six years later, she was able to edge her way into an outdoor mall, where she opened her third store. At a time when Scottsdale malls didn't have boutiques, it took an innovative mall coupled with an aggressive effort by Croll to secure their place. Says Jennifer, "We helped [the developers]recognize they needed small independents to make [the mix] interesting."
Now Croll is the one being courted Since 2003, she has opened three more locations in California and Texas and is expecting to end the year with over $5 million in sales. For those looking to follow suit, Jennifer commends having enough capital to withstand a year without profit and being prepared for stricter regulations regarding everything from lighting to signage

JenniferCroll opened her first boutique in Los Gatos, California in 1994 with the inspiration of giving women a completely new shopping experience. Her firs tboutique had the feeling of a “best friend’s closet” stocked with the hottest designers and trendsetting styles. With Croll’s first foray into retail are sounding success, she opened a second boutique on San Francisco’s Chestnut Street. Croll’s attraction to the country-club lifestyle impelled her to move her growing retail empire to Scottsdale, where she opened her first Arizona boutique at Kierland Commons. Croll currently has boutiques in Newport Beach, Dallas and Scottsdale, each of which emphasizes shopping as a lifestyle, not a series offers. To that end, she caters to the shopper that is well traveled, sophisticated and label conscious. Croll hopes that The Mix at Southbridge will transform the Scottsdale Waterfront into a great downtown area with a hip and uniquely urban attitude.

http://www.jennifercroll.com Now that Jennifer Croll is getting national props for her retail vision, we wish we could say we knew her when. The fact is, Croll opened her first boutique in California — but don't blame us for boasting that she soon found a better shopping mecca in Scottsdale. Today, Croll's six-boutique empire is based in the Valley of the Sun, and she's not only leading The Mix, the giant new, Fred Segal-esque retail space in Old Town, she's also running great shops in Kierland Commons and DC Ranch. Yes, you can get Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses and Theory pants elsewhere in town, but nobody, and we mean nobody, picks pieces with a better eye than Croll and company. It's like having a personal shopper to pare down the collections to leave us with only the high notes— and then arranging them so artfully, we really can't help buying more things than we'd planned. We get confused in department stores, but at Jennifer Croll,we just get lucky.
